About the Photographer
Douglas Butler has traveled the world for more than twenty years, photographing remote regions and native cultures. A kayaker, trekker and mountain climber, he uses 35-mm cameras and fine-grained slide film to capture scenes from sea kayaks, steep trails and lofty summits, images spanning five continents. His photos are not digitally manipulated and filters are rarely used. “I wish to photograph native cultures, wildlife and landscapes in a sensitive, realistic style,” he states, “trying to show the beauty, wonder and essence of the scene.”Butler’s photographs have won many awards and have appeared numerous times in regional and national publications. He has written two books that include his photography, Ashe County-Discovering the Lost Province (1992), a guide to the North Carolina mountain region he calls home, and A Walk Atop America-Fifty State Summits and a Dream to Reach Them All (Parkway Publishers, 2007), a description of his quest to reach the highest geographical point in each of the fifty United States. An emergency and family medicine physician, Dr. Butler continues to work with underserved populations on American Indian reservations. |
